The 2019 vintage was more challenging than ’18 with some unseasonal rain in early March which our block of Shiraz did not enjoy; as a result, we‘ve chosen two parcels of fruit from near Albany and Mt Barker for this year’s release (and our Porongurup Shiraz was picked early to make a lovely Rose instead!). The vineyard just NE of Albany has provided the fragrant fruit flavour & light peppery characters that are associated with cool climate Shiraz; the Mt Barker fruit is from a slightly warmer site and provides the depth of colour, flavour and body. Still badged ‘Syrah’, it’s definitely an attractive, cool climate style as per France’s northern Rhone Valley.
A deep, dark crimson red.
Has fresh and vibrant berry fruits on the nose; some light peppery aromas together with a hint of blueberry coulis.
Our 2019 Syrah is a fragrant, medium bodied dry red; it has a beautiful balance between its fruit flavour and fine structure. The delicious and vibrant dark berry fruit flavours are complexed by a hint of spice and the gently drying tannins contribute to its good length. Eight months maturation in 2nd fill French oak has added some complexity without losing the depth or freshness of the fruit. It is a lightly spicy Shiraz with subtlety and finesse. Very drinkable now, it will also continue to develop with further bottle age. Would be a good match with any meal, from black peppered tofu to a lamb or duck dish.
